Default What time is lights out?

Hey, just looking for some input for a 12 year old girl and a 14 year old boy. Both have laptops and TV's in their bedrooms. Right now we have no real rules about bed or "lights out". We want to implement them but are having a problem understanding what is typical.

Please advise. All input is desired! Thanks!

Having survived parenting preteen & teens......
Unless they have a very early school morning, I think 10 PM is reasonable for them to be in bed.

Now, if they had to be at school early for practice of some sort....6:00 AM, I would suggest earlier.

As far as turning off the laptops, TV maybe between 10 and 10:30. Gives them time to quietly wind down.

During regular vacation times, we did not set a specific limit for bedtime.

Do you think earlier friends?

I think 10 is a good time. I would let them use their laptops/tvs up until 10 and then they can wind down by 10:30...that time is def reasonable

Mine was 10 pm on a school night until I was 14, after that if I was too tired in the morning it was my own fault so I couldn't moan. I never had a tv or anything in my room but I was allowed to read in bed after 10 pm, but that turned into doing a rush job on homework for the next day most nights.

Smile thanks for the input

After your comments, and great debate with my partner we have implemented the following bedtimes for weeknights during the summer:

Boy 14 - Bed at 11:30 lights out at 1:00
Girl 12 - Bed at 10:30 lights out at 12:00

I think it is a bit too late but of course am comprimising with their dad. Their mother does not work and her boyfriend is a Fireman. So with the funny work hours in her home there are no bedtimes for any of the 5 kids that live there.

Currently the 12 year old hates us, but we will work on that!

Thanks for the support,

Kirsten

I think that's more than reasonable! I'm in bed between 10 & 11!

the times are flexible enough. and it is a good exercise to train the discipline of the children especially the pre-teens. at home eight years ago, the lights-out is at 1030pm when i was in my pre-teens just in time for the evening news to end.

10 should be a good time. 12-14 year olds shouldn't be sleeping at 12+. Tell them maybe when they are juniors or seniors already as it prepares them for the rigors of college life.
