Sal,

See the hand wheel on the right of your machine, look at it straight on. You will see a knob in the middle, perhaps silver? (can't get to my kenmore at the moment so not sure if it is the same color as the wheel or silver).

Now sit back in front of your machine, with you left hand hold the wheel so it doesn't move, with your right hand, loosen the knob. You will be turning the knob.

That will stop the needle bar from moving up and down. If it doesn't, your machine needs a trip to the Sewing Machine Doctor for a little repair on the ... my mind went blank! what the heck is that called???? oh goodness! I can't remember! well the sewing doc will know.
