Water that's been boiled. . .so it's sterilized. . .as opposed to tap water. But obviously it needs to be cold ergo: cold boiled water.

Goodness...already!? My mom is a dental assistant and she always said to start when the first tooth comes through or a 12 months. I guess everyone is different. I do hope no one uses tooth paste before 12 months b/c it can make them sick

It is a good idea. It's kind of like shoes. If you dont get them use to it now then you will have a hard time doing it later.

I have a very good friend whose daughter happened to have weak enamel. . .she never brushed her gums or her teeth bc the baby was bf and she didn't think there was a need bc she had heard 12 mos or when the first tooth pops through.

At 14 mos she had a full set of rotting teeth--as in her teeth came in rotting. The child had to go through major surgery to replace and pull the ones in front. It was a very, very big deal. Apparently this happens on occassion and while rare, it is soooooooo worth it to me to brush gums and not risk it. The little girl has no front teeth now and has to go through life that way until she's 6 and her permanent teeth come in.

The dentist said the baby had baby bottle tooth decay (which they can get before they have teeth). When she pointed out that the baby was bf, the dentist said that many moms who bf think their baby's teeth can't decay but if she genetically inherited weak enamel it's very possible. . .and that's exactly what happened. But you're right. . .you should never use toothpaste. . .not even flouride free for a baby that little.
