When do you take them to the dr?
Kaydee started with a runny nose about a week ago. Nothing serious, it was clear. The wetaher is getting chilly and she just got tubes, so everything is learning how to drain properly we think.
About 3 days ago she started with a cough ONLY when she is in bed or eating.
Yesterday she started with the red puffy eyes, green runny nose, and horrible cough. I mean terrible to the point where she cries because it must hurt her. You can tell she was having a hard time swallowing last night too. She didnt want to sleep and just cried and cried.
I set up the humidifier and propped her matress up. Gave her some tylenol and she finally crashed from 12-5am then went back to sleep from 6-9:30.
Now she is up, and has a very rough sounding voice. Still very thick green snot (sry) and the cough is there but not as bad. She seems happy. Playing and such. She is crying very easily tho. She fell onto her butt while walking and started screaming like she was hurt, but she wasnt lol.
I dont want to take her to the dr if all they are going to say is "she has a cold, give her tylenol and a humidifier" because I know that.
Since the cough sounds better today, and doesnt seem painful, im torn. Last night i was ready to take her to the ER and today Im not even sure if I should waste my time at the dr!!!
sorry this got long

I had a great doctor and she taught me a few things about when to call--she said to try and treat the symptoms yourself. If you do not see progression of any sort after 3 days then to call for an appointment. Kaydee is coughing at night because there is phelm running down the back of her throat. Try vicks on her chest or musinex (sp?) both of those things should loosen her cough and make her more comfortable. Also, sips of apple juice after a coughing fit will cut the phelm in the back of her throat. Cooler room temperature is better when you have a chest cold--too warm will make you cough. Keep propping her up and use the humidifer---hope she feels better.

Thanks! That is the answer I was looking for....our old ped who i didnt like, always had me scared about coughs because she always told me "Until she starts coughing, dont bother calling" so i wasnt sure if a cough was bad, period.
thanks again...she is laughing at everything now and ate and drank a ton this morning

I work in the ER here and in the last couple of days have seen a bunch of babies and toddlers come in with Croup. Just last night I think we had 9 or 10 different kids come in with it and 3 were admitted so it looks like the Fall viral season has hit us hard already, here in Tx anyway. Poor baby, I hope she gets to feeling better soon though thats got to be miserable. ANd I know when I get that sick I feel like crying about everything too! lol

Don't green buggies mean infection? (Sinus infection?) Too bad today is Friday because if it gets any worse this weekend, then you're stuck until Monday, or you end up paying more for Urgent Care/ER! When I'm torn between doc/no doc with Alex, I just take her to the Minute Clinic! There are a ton of them in my area, and it's just the $20 copay. You also don't have to make an appointment, and if it turns out to be nothing (always does with Alex!) then you didn't waste time making an appointment and going all the way to the doctor. And it's also super easy to get the prescription, if you need one! For a cold or sinus infection, Minute Clinic is a dream come true! Then you could get the flu shot for everyone too!
Glad to hear she is feeling better today! The nights are always so much worse than the days. Hope she doesn't have another rough night!

there are lots of croupe cases around here too i have heard about...i dont even know what it is, but ill be looking it up now
my dr always told me yellow means infection, green is normal...it makes sense if you think about all the time you blow your nose and its green....you dont always have an infection....its just really thick and thats the weird part of it (not normal anyway)

Ellamae and I have both been sick. Another trick to add is saline spray, but Ellamae hates it. About 3 days ago I bought Little Noses Saline Mist (not spray) It come in a can and it continually spays a mist. You just hold the button down (no bottle to squeeze) and she loves it! It is a very fine mist and works well. I even got me some.
If her snot is really green it is a sign of a infection, and if she has had this for a while it probably turned into a sinus infection. When your nose is continually clogged bacteria can thrive in there!

Clear is normal! But it will get a little greenish sometimes but if it is continually green all the time and thick I would bet it is an infection.

Of course now I want to take her in JIC but DH as at a working interview....its kind of like they are "testing" him...he works a full day and they see how he keeps up and gets alone...and he gets paid. So i cant ask him to come home (his stupid car is broken down out in our driveway)

That makes me feel a lot better
