When does 2nd trimester officially start?
Recently I was having a discussion about when the second trimester officially starts. I know that many think that it starts at 12 weeks, but I was under the impression that it really starts at 14 weeks. I did a little bit of looking around on pregnancy sites, and all of them say 14 weeks is the beginning, and none said anything about 12 weeks being the beginning. I only looked at a few sites (babycenter.com, etc.), so I could be wrong.
I understand that a person would think 12 weeks is the beginning because 12+12+12= 36, which in the eyes of many docs, that is full term. On the other hand, 14+14+14= 42, which would technically be two weeks overdue. Both make a lot of sense, but if the trimesters went by 12 week intervals, then the third trimester would start at 24 weeks... totally doesn't make sense, esp. since we know that 27 weeks marks the end of the second trimester.
Sorry for all the babbling! I was just trying to make sense of what should be a simple subject!! LoL Anyone have any input?
