Obviously it depends on the type of television shows you have where you live, your own children and how you yourself see things. I myself don't watch tv that much, but my mother is a tv addict so growing up even if no one was watching the tv was normally on, we two main soaps here in the UK Coronation street and Eastenders, both of which I hate, they do both show sex and violence but a lot of the time they seem to get it right.
As they are designed to mimick real life they show people making mistakes sexually, such as not using protection, teenage pregnancy etc. Now I think these are quite good, as they aren't saying go out and have sex with anyone, most of the time they are showing the viewers how a quick decision can land you in trouble/difficulty. I remember a few years ago a fairly young teenage girl became pregnant on Coronation street, nothing was shown about it being glamorous or a good idea, they showed how not only the baby would effect you physically, but you cannot go to school, you cannot socialise as much as you normally would etc.
I don't see the point of only allowing children to watch or witness things where nothing goes wrong so it is always happily ever after, to me that just reinforces that bad things arent going to happen to you, which is something a lot of people fall back on as a way to pretend they aren't making mistakes and they are happy with their lives.
Here the watershed is quite stritch, when a soap is on before 9pm, if there is a sex scene you never see anything, normally you just see a couple go off to their bedroom, as far as violence is concerned you do sometimes see punching and kicking.
