The same way we mommies get them, ! Penelope had a couple while she was still in diapers. It looked like little red polka dots on her bottom . What happens is the wet diaper is a moist breeding ground for the candida (yeast) which are a fungus (EW!) The candida are normally on the skin in that area in small amounts, just a part of our natural flora and fauna, so to speak. But when conditions are conducive to it, such as in a moist, dark diaper, the candida can multiply very rapidly causing an overgrowth and an uncomfortable, itchy rash.

You probably have a prescription for Katelyn's current infection, but if it happens again you can soak her bottom in a warm bathtub with about 1/2 box of baking soda to relieve the itching and then apply lotramin cream (found in the athletes foot treatment aisle) to the rash. Do that twice a day for a week. It will clear it right up!

It must be dh's fault then.......and we did get a prescription but I will keep that in mind for her and myself!! I have had the problem myself a few times...I had no idea why because I always forget to ask the doctor why...as silly as that sounds. I get distracted by my baby most times...it's so hard to think when she's getting into stuff.

I get them when I swim, if I don't change out of my swimming suit right away. And if I want to sunbathe for a bit after I swim while the children splash in the pool... I don't change my suit and end up with a yeast infection. I hate them!

One thing though, the pediatrician reccommended the lotrimin for Penny when she had an infection in between our insurance providers changing and she was temporarily not covered. It worked like a charm! The only thing is, it needs to be applied externally only, not the same way an adult woman would treat herself with a topical cream, if you know what I mean. If you need treatment, you should use a monistat product, or a generic of that sort. If you go to your doc for a yeast infection, ask for diflucan or fluconazole for treatment. It is the very best thing I have ever used for this particular problem. You just swallow one little pill, that is it, and it WORKS! I used to have recurring yeast infections that drove me crazy, especially in the summer. Let me tell you, my gyno prescribed diflucan for me last July (2007) and gave me 2 refills. I have not had to use my refills! I have not had one single problem with it since I used the diflucan the first time. I went ahead and got them refilled, since the refills were about to expire, but I honestly hope I never have need of them again.

I started getting infections when I got pregnant with Katelyn...I had a few UTI's then I got pregnant again and had the worst yeast infection ever...and since then things have been crazy and I get infections easily it seems....I think its my crazy hormones causing problems.

They can also be caused by stress, hormones changing in the body (like during pregnancy) and they can be brought on by prescription drugs, especially antibiotics and birth control. Penny used to get ear infections, the doc would prescribe amoxicillin, and a week later she would have a yeast infection. I noticed this pattern, but the doc still maintained that it was likely due to overexposure to wet diapers. But I did some research and found that my observations were correct .
Some of us, unfortunately, just seem to be prone to this sort of thing, while others can wear wet swim suits, pop penicillin, and stress out to the max and never have a problem. I get UTI's too. I stopped drinking soda of any kind. That helps a lot, and I lost some weight with it as an additional beneficial side effect . Drinking lots of water and less sugary drinks helps prevent both types of infections as well. I hope Katelyn's clears up soon and she doesn't get anymore of them.

Antibiotics are really bad for allowing candida to overgrow. Was she on any lately? Also, cutting back on sugar or high sugar high yeast foods sometimes can hepl prevent them.
The yeast feed on sugar (Bread, candy, soda, juice, too much fruit) They also recommend eating yogurt---but it has to be plain yogurt because all of the kinds with fruit have added sugars-therefore they feed the yeast. If she won't eat the plain yogurt by itself, mix it in with a fresh baked (Or nuked) sweet potato.

She doesn't drink juice...she refuses to eat fruit or sweets in general....actually she doesn't eat much. She eats crackers and potatos...and grilled cheese..........and mac n cheese..................everything else just ends up on the floor or IN her diaper (literally without going through her mouth) She tries to trick me into thinking she ate it and I find it when I change her pants! She hasn't been on any meds either...I really do just think it's her daddy...he watches her all morning for me because he keeps me up late and I need more sleep than that! I have no idea what they do all morning but I know she gets breakfast and usually a bath too but I don't know how long he leaves her in her night diaper. He claims innocence but he always does....

What do you wash her in? She should not be getting anything apart from water or feminine wash on her lady bits as other products kill the bacteria which stops thrush spreading through the vagina as it is always there, just always fought when conditions are hunky dory inside.
