Yet another reason to hate hospitals
Mikey has had a cold for a few days so hes been a bit stuffy or so we stupidly thought, today he didn't look well so he had the day off school, he didn't seem too bad though so I went to work. Frank called me after lunchtime saying he had to take Mike's to A&E as his breathing was getting really bad and he was white and hot. When the doctor called them in he announces that Pippa and Jamie aren't allowed any further into the hospital and he refused to allow them to go into the creche, which is for patients not staff, so basically he was being an arse. So he had to go back into the waiting area, he managed to get hold of my mum who picked Pip and Jamie up, he wasn't allowed to sign in again until they had gone so Mike's had to wait longer.
So when they were finally allowed to see the doctor, they found out Mikey has a lower chest infection, so he had to have an antibiotic injection then tablets every two hours. They are keeping him in over night and Frank has been refused permission to stay with him, apparently four year olds are mature enough to handle being alone, with no one they know in a strange place while feeling poorly.
We can't discharge him as they are refusing to give him a prescription, so if we did we would have to wait until we could get him a doctors appointment to get more antibiotics, because he had to have an injection and he is on antibiotics a GP cannot prescribe we can't really do anything. We have told them he isn't to have any hospital food or drink apart from water so I hope they can at least stick to that, otherwise they wont know whats hit them.
It's an open day for new starters and their parents tonight as well at school, so I'm not going to be out before visiting time is over, Frank is allowed to stay until nine, but I'm not allowed to go after 8, lots of logic in that.
I'm not happy about this at all, especially as he was poorly and we thought it was just a cold.

I really don't understand why no one is allowed to stay, he was in overnight just after christmas and he was allowed someone with him all the time.

Just curious, if Mikey is taking oral antibiotics, why do you not want him to eat food or drink water?
I am thinking the oral antibiotics without food would be hurting his stomach.
Is the hospital different than the one he was in at Christmas time?
Where are you located?
Very odd that parents are not allowed to stay w/ the child overnight.
I can see additional children not being able to visit, but the parent
should be allowed to stay overnight.
Does have have pneumonia? Bronchitis? Asthma?

i've heard quite often of other children not aloud past a certain point. it's a pain, but well worth it for their own health & the other patients.
however, i would be demanding to see every higher up about a parent not being aloud to stay with a 4 year old over night! that's absurd

And explain to me again why I would want Universal Health Care here? Every time someone posts what they go through over there--I cringe.
Likewise, not staying with a 4yo is not acceptable. If it were me, I'd ask to see the piece of paper that the policy is written on. There must be a better explanation than the one that they gave you.

Where abouts are you in the UK? I stayed with my oldest when he was in hospital for a month when he was 7. In fact they provided private room so myself and husband to stay in. It was like a hotel room upstairs from the children's ward and was completely free of charge. I've always been welcomed to stay in the hospital whenever mine have had to stay in.

I would ask to speak to a hospital administrator before I left my small child in the hospital by himself. So much could go wrong in just a few hours, especially when nurses are so overworked. Will he have constant supervision? Or will he be expected to find someone if he needs something. Can they treat him in the middle of the night, as a minor, without a parent's consent? This doesn't make any sense!!!
I hope your little guy gets better really quick!! Sorry for all of your troubles. Sending lots of hugs your way!!!

Someone should be able to stay with him overnight, did they give you a reason why? I hope he feels better soon.
